Three persons who were injured during a clash between two groups of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters in Deniyaya are receiving treatment at the Deniyaya Government Hospital.

The Deniyaya Police said the clash had broken out when the two groups had attempted to attend a meeting organized at the Kotapola Pradeshiya Sabha premises yesterday (21) to extend support to a group of SLPP candidates contesting from the Matara District.

The Deputy Chairman of the Kotapola Pradeshiya Sabha Sanjeewa Arukgoda, Kotapola Pradeshiya Sabha member Manel Ananda and Pitabeddara Pradeshiya Sabha member Jeevan Lankathilaka, are the three persons injured in the clash.

Deputy Chairman of the Kotapola Pradeshiya Sabha Sanjeewa Arukgoda said that he had been assaulted when a group of supporters from the Pitabeddara Pradeshiya Sabha had arrived at the location and were requested to adhere to the health guidelines.

Meanwhile, Jeevan Lankathilaka from the Pitabeddara Pradeshiya Sabha alleged that a candidate from the Matara District Weerasumana Weerasekara had threatened to kill him, eventually resulting in Sanjeewa Arukgoda, an MSD officer of former MP Kanchana Wijesekera and Manel Ananda assaulting him.

Former MP Kanchana Wijesekera said that the dispute had occurred due to an uninvited group of supporters attempting to attend a meeting organized by him in Deniyaya.

Wijesekera added that he has filed a complaint with the Police on the incident. (Newswire)
