Former member of the Northern Province Council M. K. Sivajilingam has been arrested on a warrant issued by the Jaffna Magistrate.

Sivajilingam was arrested by the Valvettithurai Police today.

The warrant was issued against Sivajilingam, who contested the Presidential election in 2019, for failing to appear before court over a case filed in 2018 against him.

A case was filed against Sivahilingam and others by the Department of Police in 2018 over a protest in Mullaitivu.

The group is accused of staging a protest, which resulted in Government officials being unable to survey over 600 acres of land that was to be allocated to the Sri Lankan Navy.

Sivajilingam was charged with damage of state property, among other charges over the incident. (Newswire)
