Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has pointed out the legalization of cannabis for recreational and medical purposes in Sri Lanka faces many issues such as its misuse and unrestricted usage.

Addressing a political rally, the former MP said from ancient times, Sri Lankan ayurvedic doctors have used cannabis for medical purposes, such as pain killers and in the treatment of mental illness.

MP Patali Champika Ranawak added that a number of patients in the National Institute of Mental Health in Angoda are being treated due to the misuse and overuse of cannabis as a drug.

The use of cannabis for medical purposes has been approved in Sri Lanka, but its legalization for recreational purposes faces challenges due to its usage as an illegal drug, he added. (Newswire)
