Members from the Women for Rights Organization and relatives of Sri Lankan migrant women stranded in Jordan staged a protest opposite the Sri Lanka Bureau for Foreign Employment (SLBFE) today.

Nearly 710 Sri Lankan migrant women employed in two factories in Jordan are said to be stranded due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The women are reported to have not received salaries over the last 5 months and are in immediate need of food and medical assistance.

A protest was staged today over several demands pertaining to the stranded women, including a specific date for their repatriation and an investigation into their current situation.

Officials from the SLBFE who met with representatives of the protesters had vowed to address the immediate requirements of the stranded Sri Lankan migrant women in Jordan and brief the Minister of Foreign Relations in this regard.

On Monday (27), the Jordanian Police fired tear gas to disperse a group of Sri Lankan migrant workers who were engaged in a protest in Karak.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan yesterday clarified that a group of its staff members being held hostage by the Sri Lankan migrant workers for over 5- hours at the Camel and Wega Factory in Karak had led to the situation. (Newswire)
