The National Election Commission has urged voters to refrain from publishing photographs and videos of individuals casting their ballots at the General Elections 2020.

Chairman of the Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said the publishing of such photographs and videos was a violation of the election law.

Voters and admins of social media pages have been urged to refrain from publishing such content as it is illegal, Deshapriya said.

He added that legal action will be taken against those violating election laws in this manner.

The warning comes following reports of voters posting marked ballot papers on social media.

Meanwhile, the National Election Complaint Management Center managed by the Elections Dispute Resolution Unit (EDR) is in action at the Election Commission Headquarters.

In addition to traditional election violence and violation of laws being monitored, over 4,000 issues pertaining to Social Media were screened during the last 48- hours by this Unit.

A total of 25 District Complaint Units and subdivisions are currently coordinating with the Unit. (Newswire)
