09th Parliament: Youngest MP 25 and oldest MP 87

Nearly 11% of the 09th Parliament of Sri Lanka is represented by youths, the Communications Department of the Parliament said.

Twenty- five (25) members between the age of 25 – 40 have been elected to Parliament, while 04 members among the group are between the age of 25 and 30.

Twenty- one (21) MPs are between the age of 31 and 40 and 09 members from the group are first time MPs.

The highest number of 67 MPs are found within the age range of 41-50, while 54 MPs are said to be between the age of 51- 60.

Party Leaders Sajith Premadasa, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Patali Champika Ranawaka, Palani Digambaram, and Mano Ganesan fall under this category.

Thirty-seven (37) MPs fall under the age of 61-70, including 69-year-old former President Maithripala Sirisena.

Nine (09) MPs are between the age of 71-80, including Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Chamal Rajapaksa.

The Communications Department of the Parliament said MPs Vasudeva Nanayakkara, C. V. Wigneswaran  and R. Sampanthan are the only three MPS between the age of 81-90.

Late Minister Arumugam Thondaman’s son Jeevan Thondaman is the youngest member of Parliament, while Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader R. Sampanthan is the oldest member of Parliament.  (Newswire)
