What will happen in the first session of parliament tomorrow: 10 key proceedings

The 09th Parliament of Sri Lanka will convene for its inaugural session tomorrow (20).

A number of key proceedings are set to take place during the inaugural sitting.

The following are the 10 key events that will take place during the first session of the 09th Parliament of Sri Lanka.

  1. Members may sit in any seat until a seat has been allocated to each member.
  2. The Secretary-General of Parliament will read out the proclamation sent by the President.
  3. The 09th Parliament commences its inaugural session.
  4. Election to select the Speaker of the House.
    • Any member addressing the Secretary-General of Parliament shall propose any member as the Speaker.
    • If only one member is proposed and seconded as the Speaker, the Secretary-General of Parliament will declare that person as the Speaker of the House.

5. Voting will take place to elect the Speaker of the House.

    • Candidates who will obtain the least number of votes shall be excluded accordingly until one can be elected.
    • The results of the ballot shall be declared by the Secretary-General of Parliament.

6.The elected Speaker of the House will take his official oaths or will make the official Affirmation.

7. Every member will take his/her official oaths or will make the official Affirmtion following the Speaker.

8. They will then sign the members’ role.

    • It is the book members of Parliament will sign on kept by the Secretary-General of Parliament.

9. The Deputy-Speaker of Parliament will be elected.

10. The Deputy- Chairperson of Committees will be elected.

    • The procedure of electing a Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairperson of Committees will be the same as the election of a Speaker.
    • The election shall be conducted by the Speaker of the House.
