The Supreme Court today decided to take up for consideration the Fundamental Rights(FR) petition filed by a disabled soldier injured during a protest in 2017.

The soldier suffered complete blindness in one eye after being injured by tear gas attacks during a protest by disabled soldiers over pension issues in 2017.

In his FR petition, Kankanamge Nishantha Mihiraj from Matara has requested for a compensation of Rs. 10 million from the Government for the injury.

The Petitioner claimed that the injury was caused as a result of tear gas being fired arbitrarily by the police to disperse the protest, adding that the police have violated his fundamental rights by this act.

The petition was taken up before the Supreme Court judge bench comprising of Justices Priyantha Jayawardena, Vijith Malalgoda, and Yasantha Kodagoda, today (15).

Accordingly, the judge bench has decided to take up the petition on May 04, 2021. (NewsWire)
