The National Police Commission (NPC) has granted approval to promote a female Police Officer as Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for the first time in the history of the Sri Lanka Police.
Secretary to the NPC Nishantha Weerasinghe said sending the names of 09 female Senior Superintendents of Police (SSP), Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana Wickremaratne had requested the Commission to approve a name from the group.
SSP Bimsani Jasinghaarachchi from the Child and Women Bureau of the Department of Police was selected as the senior most female Police officer from among the nominated names.
SSP Jasinghaarachchi joined the Police Service as a Police Inspector in 1997 and was later promoted as a SSP in 2017.
SSP Premila Dhiwakara was the first female officer to hold a high post in the Department of Police. She was the first female officer to join the Police service and retired while holding the post of SSP.
The appointment of a female Police officer as DIG is considered to be the first such promotion by the Police Department. (NewsWire)
