Covid outbreak in prisons: Bail to be given for remand prisoners

The Attorney General (AG) has issued revised instructions and guidelines pertaining to prisons in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The AG’s Coordinating Officer said that the instructions have been given at the request of Minister of Justice Ali Sabry in view of the COVID- 19 spread in Remand Prisons.

The AG has directed the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to grant bail to Suspects in remand and file charges in order to reduce prison overcrowding.

Over 100 inmates, including close to 99 at the Welikada prison, have so far tested positive for COVID-19 following the recent outbreak.

The Commissioner General of Prisons said that 107 inmates, including 90 female inmates, in both the Welikada and Old Bogambara Prisons have tested positive for Covid-19 so far. (NewsWire)
