Mahara Prison Unrest : 6 dead 35 injured

6 persons have died while 35 others have sustained injuries in the unrest reported at the Mahara Prison yesterday.

2 prison officials critical, Police said.

“The fire that broke out at the Mahara Prisons has been extinguished, operation still under way to bring situation fully under control” Prison department told Ada Derana.

Massive fire reported from the Mahara prison premises according to area residents.

“Currently we are seeing a massive fire from the distance, earlier we heard many gun shot firing” area resident told NewsWire.

A tense situation occured this evening at the Mahara prison, according to reports at least 1 prison inmate died and several others got injured.

Prison department said that 5 special STF teams have been deployed to control the situation.

Ragama hospital said that 5 inmates who got injured were currently being treated at the hospital.

According to Hiru TV, a prison inmate died when prison officers opened fire to control the tense situation.

Ministry of Prison Reforms said that they have  appointed a committee headed by the ministry secretary to probe the unrest at the Mahara Prison.

Exact reason for the unrest still unknown.
