Jaffna civilians held a parade along the streets surrounding the Jaffna Fort and the town in celebration of the Nation Independence Day, which is marked today.

The parades were held this morning to express their solidarity with sentiments of reconciliation, co-existence, harmony and national unity in parallel with the main ceremony, held at Colombo Independence Square.

Organized by the Jaffna-based Civil Society Centre for Jaffna, and led by Arul Siddahartan of Jaffna, a social service activist and peace crusader in the peninsula, the crowd held a symbolic Independence Day rally near the Jaffna library after the parade.

National Flags and banner-carrying youth on motorbikes, women, school children and moderate Tamils taking their own initiative enthusiastically demonstrated their commitment to national unity and reconciliation through this gesture. (NewsWire)
