The Attorney General (AG) has issued instructions to refrain from taking legal action against motorcyclists using full face helmets.

Attorney General Dappula de Livera had directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in this regard.

The directives were submitted at the Court of Appeal, when a petition filed by a motorcyclist from Wellawaya was taken up for consideration today.

The petitioner claimed the Wellawaya Police had filed a case at the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court against him on charges of wearing a full face helmet.

He said the case has been filed under the regulation pertaining to the ban imposed on full face helmets introduced in 2017.

The petitioner pointed out that the regulation was not passed in Parliament and hence cannot be considered as a law.

He further challenged the case filed by the Wellawaya Police, stating it was a violation of the law.

Earlier, a ban was imposed on full face helmets in Sri Lanka due to an increase in robberies by individuals using the helmets to carry out the thefts. (NewsWire)
