The Government has selected a plot of land in the Iranaitivu Island in the Gulf of Mannar to bury the remains of COVID-19 victims in Sri Lanka.

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the island was selected by the Technical Committee of the Health Ministry.

He said some plots of land in other places in Mannar and in Ampara were also considered for burials.

Stating that discussions were held on the matter over the last few days, Minister Rambukwella said that the Health Ministry will make a formal announcement after finalizing the location and obtaining necessary clearance in this regard.

He said the Ministry will also issue fresh health guidelines to be followed for the burial of remains of Covid victims.

The Government has permitted the burial of Covid victims after carrying out cremations for a period of 11-months, which was objected by many, including the Opposition, civil society and the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
