Peliyagoda Police officers involved in assaulting Law student ordered to be arrested

All Police officers attached to the Peliyagoda Police station suspected to have been involved in the assault of a law student have been ordered to be arrested.

The Attorney General’s (AG) Coordinating Officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said AG Dappula de Livera had instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickremeratne to arrest the suspected Police officers.

She said the AG further instructed the IGP to produce them before Court on charges filed under the Penal Code and Torture Act.

A group of Police officers were accused of assaulting the law student at the Peliyagoda Police station on 26th February.

The 23-year-old youth, Migara Gunaratne, had been assaulted when he visited the Police station.

He is the son of former Central Province Governor, President’s Counsel Maithri Gunaratne. (NewsWire)
