Random PCR tests will be conducted on people returning home for the New Year festive season, health authorities said.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said the PCR tests will target people working in the Board of Investment Free Trade Zones and construction sites in Colombo.

He said there is a risk of the coronavirus spreading to areas outside of Colombo, due to a large number of the working population returning home for the festive season.

Dr. Samaraweera said a large number of factory employees are expected to travel home from Colombo during this period.

He pointed out as the infection among factory employees is still rampant, it poses a risk for the spread of the virus.

Regional Epidemiologists have been instructed to conduct random PCR tests focusing on employees of the Economic Development Zones.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said random PCR tests will also be conducted on long distance buses. (NewsWire)
