Sri Lanka imported Rs 1.2 trillion worth vehicles from 103 countries in 2015-19

The former Good- Governance Government has imported 2, 515, 546 vehicles between 2015 and 2019, State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal informed Parliament today.

The State Minister of Finance said the vehicles had been imported for a cost of Rs. 1.2 trillion.

Giving a breakdown in Parliament, State Minister Cabraal said 647,444 vehicles were imported in 2015, another 469 304 in 2016, a total of 460,201 in 2017, another 494 488 in 2018, and 344, 059 vehicles in 2019.

He said the vehicles had been imported from 103 countries.

State Minister Cabraal said the Government had decided to impose a ban on the importation of vehicles due to the coronavirus pandemic, and in order to stabilize the economy.

He further said the Government will reconsider the ban in the latter part of this year.

State Minister Cabraal also said that when the Government relaxes the ban it will focus more attention on the importation of electric vehicles. (NewsWire)
