Indictments filed against 17 over destruction of Buddha statues in Mawanella

The Attorney General today filed indictments at the Kegalle High Court over the case filed on the destruction of Lord Buddha statues in Mawanella in 2018.

The indictments have been filed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

The Attorney General has further called on the Chief Justice to appoint a trial-at-bar to try 17 suspects charged in connection to the case.

The suspects are Naufer Moulawi, Ibrahim Moulawi, Mohammed Sajid, Mohammed Sahid, Sadik Abdullah, Sainul Abdeen, Mohammed Milhan and 9 others.

They have been accused of conspiracy to cause violence, incite religious ill feeling and disharmony amongst communities by the destruction of five Buddha statues and another in the Mawanella area in December 2018. (NewsWire)
