Over 900 drunk drivers arrested during special traffic operation

Over 900 drunk drivers have been arrested during the last 18-hours ending at 06 am today.

The Police said a special traffic operation had been launched from 12 pm on Sunday to 06am today targeting people returning from the April holidays.

They said 905 drunk drivers were arrested during this period, while cases were filed over various traffic offences against 6,898 people.

The Police further said data has shown that a majority of traffic offences were committed by motorcyclists and three-wheeler drivers during this period.

It has also been noted that 75% of accidents in the country are caused due to the recklessness of motorcyclists and three-wheeler drivers.

The Police pointed out that 69 deaths due to motor accidents were reported over the last seven days.

They said the deaths were reported from 06am on 13th April to 06am today.

The Police added that data shows 13 deaths were reported per day during the last seven days.

They called on all motorists and the public to be vigilant and to cooperate to prevent accidents in the country. (NewsWire)
