Chinese vessel with radioactive materials enters Hambantota port, ordered to leave

The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Agency has instructed a Chinese vessel carrying radioactive materials, that had entered the Hambantota habour, to leave immediately.

The Agency said the vessel which was enroute to China had docked at the Hambantota harbor last night.

According to News First, the Director-General of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council Anil Ranjith said the vessel had arrived from Port of Rotterdam while enroute to China.
He said the Chinese vessel had docked at the Hambantota port following a technical issue.

Anil Ranjith further said the vessel had not disclosed that it contained radioactive materials in its cargo at the time of docking.

The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council had thereafter taken measures to move out the vessel from the Inner Port to the Outer Port, where it is currently docked, he said.

The vessel has now been instructed to immediately depart from the Hambantota port. (NewsWire)
