177 arrested for violating quarantine laws

The Police have arrested 177 people for violating quarantine regulations.

This is the highest number of arrests to be made since the commencement of the operation from 31st October  2020.

The Police said the group was arrested for not wearing face masks and for failing to maintain social distancing, especially in public transportation.

They said 134 people were arrested from the Western Province, with 39 from the Colombo District, 45 from Gamapaha District, and 50 from Kalutara District.

The Police said a total of 3667 people have been arrested since 31st October, 2020 for violating quarantine laws.

They said Police officers have been deployed, including in civil attire to conduct special operations targeting public transportation.

The officers have been instructed to monitor public transportation, especially buses to see if the passengers are adhering to quarantine laws by wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing.

The Police said it is the responsibility of the owner, driver, conductor and assistant of the buses to ensure that the passengers adhere to the quarantine regulations.

They further called on the public to strictly adhere to quarantine laws, in order to curtail the spread of the virus in the country. (NewsWire)
