Six arrested for stealing iPhones sent via courier (Video)

The Police have arrested six suspects, including three employees of a leading courier service in connection with an organized theft of Apple iPhones sent to Sri Lanka via air cargo.

The Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that around 19 iPhones have been stolen in this manner since January.

Police have managed to recover 16 of those phones from mobile phone shops in Divulapitiya, Minuwangoda and Kandy.

During further investigations, it has been revealed that other three suspects are employees of a manpower company.

They are believed to have opened the sealed air cargo packs at the Airport under instructions received from the courier service supervisors.

The stolen mobile phones were estimated to be valued at over Rs. 3 million. The suspects have been remanded till the 10th of May after being produced before the Negombo Magistrate.

This organized robbery was brought to light by the Negombo Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit following a complaint.

DIG Ajith Rohana further urged the public to come forward and lodge a complaint with the police if they happen to be victims of such scams. (NewsWire)
