A family of four that had illegally arrived in Sri Lanka from India via boat has been placed under quarantine in the Gurunagar area in Jaffna.
The Police said a 61-year-old woman, her 34-year-old daughter, and the latter’s two sons aged 09 and 05, had arrived in Sri Lanka on the 07th of May.
The group had departed on a fishing boat from Rameshwaram in India, and had crossed onto a Sri Lankan fishing boat mid-seas, and had been brought to Mannar, after which they had been transported to Jaffna and had been placed in a house in the Gurunagar area.
The suspects have informed the Police that they had fled to Sri Lanka in fear of the coronavirus situation in India at present.
The group has been placed under quarantine at the house in Gurunagar, while health authorities are set to conduct PCR tests today.
The Police warned Sri Lankan fishermen to refrain from aiding the smuggling of people into the country, adding that they will be arrested and their boats will be seized.
The Police further said a woman who had arrived in India illegally via boat had been found in Puttalam on an earlier occasion.
The woman and her child were reportedly placed in isolation following their arrest. (NewsWire)
