A police officer attached to the Traffic Police Department has been injured after being hit by a car while on duty at the Wattala junction this morning.
CCTV footage on the accident shows the car, plying in the opposite direction to that faced by the Police officer, colliding with him, after which it had continued to drive on.
The injured officer had been hospitalised with the help of other Police officers and people present at the scene. The Police have reported that the officer had sustained minor injuries in the accident.
The Wattala Police has arrested the driver of the car and has also seized the vehicle.
Meanwhile, 11 deaths due to road accidents have been reported in the 24-hour period ending at 06am today.
Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said eight of the deaths were due to accidents reported yesterday (21).
He said there is a possibility of a significant increase in daily road accidents, which stands at 11 accidents per day at present. (NewsWire)
