Sports Ministry refutes media reports on Gym equipment tender scam

The Ministry of Sports has refuted media reports claiming that tender procedures have allegedly been breached over the purchase of equipment for the Fitness Center (Gym) of the Department of Sports Development under the Ministry.

Issuing a statement, Director-General of the Department of Sports Development Amal Edirisooriya said equipment for the Fitness Center (Gym) have not been purchased as yet.

He said as per the proposal submitted by the Sports Minister to improve the fitness of sports personalities across the country, it was decided to purchase quality equipment for this purpose, including for the benefit of Gymnasts in Sri Lanka.

Despite tenders having been called for the purchase of equipment, Amal Edirisooriya said a final decision has not been drawn in this regard.

The Daily Mirror had earlier reported that a serious issue has arisen in the Sports Ministry after tender procedures have been allegedly breached over the purchase of equipment for the Department of Sports Developmentā€™s Fitness Center (Gym).

Both companies that submitted bids for this tender have deficiencies in the tender files and are preparing to purchase goods from the company that submitted the highest bids. It has been further reported that the officials of the technical committee appointed for this purpose have also approved the purchase by the company which has submitted the highest bids, it reported.

The news report further said one of the two companies has offered a price of Rs. 74 million while the other company has offered a price of Rs. 66 million. (NewsWire)
