UPDATE : No tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present : Coastal areas declared safe

There is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present due to the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that struck near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today.

The National Tsunami Early Warning Centre said the earthquake had occurred 1300km off Batticaloa in the Indian Ocean.

Issuing a statement, the Centre said, however, the coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe.

Earlier, the National Tsunami Early Warning Centre announced that those living near and along the coast around the island have been advised to remain vigilant.

“Those living near and along the coast around the island are advised to be attentive regarding future announcements regarding this,” it said.

The Centre further said the latest information in this regard will be publicized through media to the public as and when it becomes available. (NewsWire)
