The Government has clarified media reports circulating on the appointment of a new Governor to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

It was reported that State Minister of Finance and Capital Markets, and Public Enterprise Reforms Ajith Nivard Cabraal is reportedly set to be sworn in as the new Governor of the Central Bank.

State Minister Cabraal is set to step down from his portfolio and resign as a member of Parliament in order to be sworn in as the Governor of the Central Bank, several media reports claimed.

However, commenting on the matter during the post- Cabinet media briefing held today, Co-cabinet spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana said there has been no firm decision made to appoint a new Governor to Sri Lanka’s Central Bank.

“Actually that has not been finalized. That is all I can say about that,” he told reporters today.

Previously, when inquired in this regard, State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal neither confirmed nor denied the news, the Daily Mirror reported.

Cabraal has previously served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, holding the post from 1 July 2006 until his resignation on 9 January 2015. (NewsWire)
