A doctor employed at the Katugastota Hospital in Kandy has died due to COVID-19, becoming the latest healthcare worker to die in Sri Lanka as a result of the virus.

The Doctor is reported to have died while receiving treatment at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital last night (15).

Dr. Sayed Rafaideen, aged 61, was admitted to the Peradeniya Hospital on the 18th of August after contracting the virus.

The doctor who had received treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital for nearly three weeks had, however, died yesterday, despite the hospital staff attempting to save his life.

The deceased who is a resident of Mavilmada had been employed at the Katugastota Hospital, which is currently operating as a Covid care centre.

He will be laid to rest at the Ottamavadi burial ground in Batticaloa. (NewsWire)
