Legal approval has been granted to provide the number portability service for mobile and fixed lines in Sri Lanka, President’s spokesman Kingsly Rathnayake announced today.

He said Chairman of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) Oshada Senanayake had revealed the development during a media briefing held at the President’s Media Centre today.

In March, it was announced that the number portability service for mobile and fixed lines, is expected to come into effect from October 2021.

Reports stated that the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) plans to introduce the service by October, enabling consumers to change service providers while retaining their numbers.

The TRCSL had in March concluded public consultations for the implementation of the number portability service which was adopted early this year.

At the time, Oshada Senanayake, who is also the Director-General of the TRCSL, said the implementation of number portability has moved to the technical discussion stage, after securing the support of all telco operators for the policy.

He further announced that the service will be implemented in consultation with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, which has been selected due to its success in implementing number portability in Pakistan. (NewsWire)
