Fewer wedding bells: Sri Lanka wedding statistics released

The number of marriage registrations in Sri Lanka has dropped by 12% between 2019 and 2020, the Department of Census and Statistics reported.

Issuing a statement, the Department said a total of 163, 378 marriage registrations were reported in 2019, while it decreased to 143,061 in 2020.

The highest number of marriage registrations in 2020 were reported from the Gampaha District, with 14, 617 weddings being conducted.

The Department further said that the number of marriage registrations between 2013 – 2020 has seen a significant decrease in comparison to the period between 2000-2012.

Nearly 200,000 marriage registrations were reported between 2000-2012.

A total of 194,217 weddings were reported in 2000 and 195,067 in 2005, while 200,985 weddings were registered in 2010.

However, a decrease was observed thereafter, with 175,939 marriages being registered in 2015.

According to the Department, the numbers further decreased with only 143,061 weddings being registered in 2020. (NewsWire)
