Colombo businessman arrested in airport with large amount of local & foreign currencies

A Colombo-based businessman has been arrested for attempting to smuggle out over Rs. 14 million worth of foreign and local currencies to Dubai.

The 27-year-old man was arrested by Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake yesterday.

Customs Spokesman and Deputy Director (Legal) Sudatta Silva said the suspect had arrived at the airport at 2.55 am to board a Dubai-bound Emirates Airlines.

The Customs has seized Rs. 10 million and US$ 20,000 from the possession of the suspect.

The man is reported to have concealed the currencies in his travelling bag which had been detected by the Customs officials at the airport departure terminal.

The Customs Department is conducting further investigations into the incident. (NewsWire)
