Newborn survives after being buried alive

A newborn child that had been buried alive by the mother has been rescued in the Chavakachcheri area in Jaffna today. 

The Police said the woman had given birth in the Mattuwil North area in the Chavakachcheri Police Jurisdiction early this morning.

She had thereafter buried the infant behind her house in an attempt to murder the child. 

Based on a complaint filed by the Grama Niladhari officer in charge of the area, the Police were able to locate the infant.

The infant was found to be breathing after being rescued and has been admitted to the Jaffna Hospital where she is receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit. 

The Police said the mother of the infant is receiving treatment at the Chavakachcheri Hospital.

Further investigations are underway into the incident. (NewsWire)
