Scheduled power cuts will not be imposed until Monday, the 31st of January, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) announced today.

Chairman of the PUCSL Janaka Ratnayake said that a decision has been taken not to impose power cuts over the next three days.

Stating that there is a small shortage of electricity during peak hours from 06.30 pm- 10.30 pm tomorrow (28), he called on the consumers to use electricity sparingly during this period.

The announcement comes after a discussion was held today to review the current power crisis in the country.

Earlier, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said that the power supply will not be disrupted from Tuesday (25) until today, and a decision on future power cuts will be taken following discussion today.

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) announced earlier today that it will provide the necessary fuel to the CEB to generate power for the next two weeks.

Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila said yesterday that the necessary diesel and furnace oil will be granted based on the existing stock of fuel at the CPC.

Meanwhile, India today approved a US$ 500 million fuel line credit for Sri Lanka to purchase petroleum products from India.

The move comes after Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa informed yesterday that steps will be taken to obtain the fuel line credit from India.

The CEB has been warning of scheduled power cuts for over 1 hour as it is unable to generate power due to a lack of fuel.

Fuel supplier CPC is unable to purchase fuel due to a shortage of dollars caused by the foreign exchange crisis in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
