Police inquiry against Harin over torch incident

A complaint is to be made to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over MP Harin Fernando’s conduct in Parliament yesterday, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced today.

Addressing the Parliament, the Speaker said an inquiry will be conducted into the incident where MP Fernando had brought a torchlight into the Parliament.

He further said that complaints have also been filed claiming that the MP had brought in the torchlight along with another parcel despite objections by the Police.

The Speaker said MP Fernando has been accused of obstructing the duties of the Police through his actions and this could pose a threat to the Parliament.

Thereby, a complaint has been made to the IGP to conduct an inquiry into the matter, he added.

The announcement was made after Minister Dinesh Gunawardena called for an investigation into the “devices” brought by MP Fernando, claiming that their components, if mixed with other substances, could be used in the triggering of a chemical reaction.

Raising a point of order, the Minister said bringing in items that are not included in the list of objects allowed in the Parliament premises poses a threat to the security of the House and the MPs themselves.

The move comes after a tense situation arose in Parliament yesterday after MP Harin Fernando had brought a torchlight into the chamber during Parliament proceedings.

The MP had informed the Speaker that he had brought the torchlight in order to be able to use the lavatory in the event of a power cut.

A heated argument thereafter occurred between MP Fernando and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, with the latter stating that allowing such equipment inside the Parliament was a threat to security. (NewsWire)
