There is a possibility for electricity charges to be increased by 500% as per a proposal by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said.

Addressing an event in Anamaduwa, he said, according to sources, the CEB is considering increasing electricity charges.

“The public will have to sit and look at the various bulbs and fans in their houses and not use them. The country has fallen into such a situation,” he said.

The State Minister said this situation has occurred due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic that has plagued the country for two years, and the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

However, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) had earlier said that electricity charges will not be increased any time soon.

The PUCSL said it will decide on a price hike only after reviewing the necessary data obtained from the CEB in this regard.

The Commission further said that the reviewing process will require a long period of time. (NewsWire)
