President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has extended his apologies to former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, over Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Ajith Nivard Cabraal’s statement at the All-Party Conference that was convened today.

The President extended his apologies after former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had slammed Cabraal for talking politics at the All-Party Conference.

Addressing the conference, Cabraal had briefed the political parties of Sri Lanka’s current economic crisis and had laid blame on the former Government for the present situation.

Commenting on Cabraal’s speech, United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe objected to the statement and slammed Cabraal for talking politics at the conference.

Stating that the conference has been convened to discuss the economic crisis, the former Prime Minister said this was not the place to play the blame game.

Responding to MP Wickremesinghe’s statement, President Rajapaksa said “I apologize if any of the statements by the Central Bank Governor had caused hurt to MP Wickremesinghe.”

He further said the Central Bank Governor had only pointed out the process that should have been followed, and hence had made the statement pertaining to the former Government.

Stating that the conference was not held to raise allegations against anyone, the President said the conference has been convened to collect suggestions from other party leaders to find solutions to the persisting economic crisis. (NewsWire)
