Sri Lanka is currently facing a severe power crisis due to the lack of fuel to generate electricity.

Over 10-hours of power cuts have been imposed in Sri Lanka over the past few weeks as a result.

Here are seven key updates on the current power crisis in Sri Lanka:

  • There is a possibility for the power cuts to be reduced by nearly 4- hours after the 2nd of April as the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has agreed to provide a stock of fuel in the coming days.
  • However, it has been reported that all fuel available for electricity supply will end by 5 pm today.
  • Only the Norochcholai and Hydropower remain functional. Both together are expected to only generate 1200 Mega Watts of electricity which will be sufficient for 10- hours.
  • The public has been warned to expect power shedding of nearly 10-14 hours tomorrow as well until the fuel crisis is resolved.
  • All 160 plus areas, which included hospitals and Industrial Zones, that were exempted from power cuts will be monitored and reviewed.
  • All houses that were in the 160 plus exempted areas will be taken off the grid from today, according to PUCSL sources.
  • The Lanka Indian Oil Company has agreed to provide 6,000 Metric Tonnes of Diesel for electricity generation. However, it is unclear if the fuel will be available for power generation from tonight, which could reduce tomorrow’s power cut hours. (NewsWire)
