The public has launched a protest in front of the Trincomalee Navy Base after reports emerged that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was at the location.

Reports claimed that the former Prime Minister and some of his family members had left the Temple Trees in Colombo and had arrived at the Trincomalee Naval Base this morning.

Unrest broke out across Sri Lanka after Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters who met Mahinda Rajapaksa last morning attacked anti-government protesters outside Temple Trees and at the Galle Face Green in Colombo yesterday.

Following the unrest, Mahinda Rajapaksa tendered his resignation from the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

The angry public was seen attempting to break into Temple Trees last night, after which it was reported that the former Prime Minister had been evacuated from the premises under a special operation early this morning.

Reports later emerged that he along with some of his family members have reached the Trincomalee Naval Base this morning, prompting the public to surround the base and stage a protest.

The protesters engaged in the protest have called on the former Prime Minister to step out and for the Navy to refrain from providing protection.

However, it is not confirmed if the former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and members of his family are at the said location. (NewsWire)
