There is a possibility of the islandwide curfew being lifted tomorrow morning (12) depending on the situation in the country, Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) said today.

Speaking to the media, the Defence Secretary said that in the event there are no reports of incidents of violence then a decision may be taken to lift the curfew.

He, however, warned that the curfew may stay in place if incidents of violence continue, and the decision on the matter will be based on the prevailing situation in the country at the time.

The Defence Secretary emphasized that the authorities are prepared to face any incidents that may or may not occur during the course of the day and into the night.

Stating that he is aware of the inconvenience caused to the general public due to the curfew, Kamal Gunaratne said the authorities and people have to be mindful of security and inconvenience which are two separate factors.

The Defence Secretary urged the public to bear with the inconvenience until security is restored in the nation.

An islandwide curfew was imposed after unrest broke out across Sri Lanka on Monday. The curfew which was initially imposed till this morning was later extended till 07 am tomorrow (12). (NewsWire)
