The post-mortem examination into the death of the late Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala has revealed that the MP had succumbed to injuries caused by assault.

The MP had sought refuge in a building after opening fire at the public in Nittambuwa during the unrest that broke out in Sri Lanka on Monday. It was later reported that he had died by suicide using his own firearm as the public had surrounded the building.

The post-mortem examination conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) at the Wathupitiwala Hospital into the Pollonaruwa District MP’s death has revealed he had succumbed to injuries caused by assault.

The report stated that the late Parliamentarian has sustained a large number of serious injuries due to being assaulted.

“The MP’s death was due to multiple injuries, fractures and internal bleeding, but he had no gunshot wounds,” the Lankadeepa newspaper said, quoting the report.

The post-mortem report further said the MP’s security official who was with him at the time of the incident has died due to a gunshot injury, with a bullet being found in his body.

The report also revealed that the security officer had also been severely assaulted sustaining severe injuries, causing a brain hemorrhage.

The JMO of the Wathupitiwala Hospital has determined that neither the MP nor his security officer had died by suicide, but had instead died due to injuries caused by severe assault. (NewsWire)
