Attempting to leave the country illegally: More people arrested in two areas

The Sri Lanka Navy has apprehended 52 suspects and 2 human traffickers following special operations conducted at the Erakandi coastal area in Trincomalee and Thalpadu coastal area in Mannar last night (05).

46 suspects were arrested on the coast of Erakandi in Trincomalee for attempting to illegally leave the country via boat to a foreign country. 

The Navy said the group consists of 12 men, 11 women, and 23 children aged between 01 and 52 years. 

The suspects have been identified as residents of Kinniya, Mutthoor, and Kumuburupiddi, and have been handed over to the Kuchchaveli Police for further legal action. 

Meanwhile, a group of 07  individuals who had attempted to illegally flee to India via boat has been arrested near the Thalpadu coast in Mannar. 

The suspects were arrested by officers attached to the Mannar Navy Camp last night (05). 

The Police said the suspects include 05 men between the ages of 18 and 48 years, a 29-year-old woman, two male children aged 05 and 08 years, and a 06-year-old female child. 

The suspects who have been identified as residents of Mannar, Welimada, and Vavuniya are to be produced before the Mannar Magistrate’s Court today. (NewsWire)
