The Speaker of the Parliament will take over as temporary President as per the Constitution of Sri Lanka, leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) MP Rauf Hakeem said.

Participating in the Party Leaders’ meeting presided by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, the MP Tweeted that a request has been made for both the President and the Prime Minister to resign.

MP Hakeem said no consensus was reached on the request for the resignation of both the President and Prime Minister, as Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has disagreed with the request.

The Speaker has, however, decided to write to the President and the Prime Minister to resign as per overwhelming requests by the party leaders, he revealed.

The MP further said that the Party Leaders also immediately agreed on the establishment of an all-party government, adding that this has a few glitches and several alternatives are being discussed.

Several party leaders including Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and Tamil National Alliance MP M. A. Sumanthiran participated via zoom in the meeting held at the Speaker’s residence, he said. (NewsWire)
