Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the arrival of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the country.

The Ministry said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been allowed entry into Singapore on a “private visit.

Singapore’s Foreign Ministry further clarified that the President did not ask for and has not been granted any asylum.

“Singapore generally does not grant requests for asylum,” the Ministry added in a statement.

Following a public uprising and calls for resignation, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives despite announcing that he will tender his resignation yesterday.

Even though he is yet to hand in his resignation, the President was flown to Singapore on a Saudi Airline flight today.

Sri Lanka is currently facing political turmoil due to the President delaying his resignation which has hindered Parliamentary affairs to decide on the future course of the country. (NewsWire)
