The Acting President and Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe has been elected as the 8th Executive President of Sri Lanka.

He was elected after securing 134 Votes in the secret ballot that was held in Parliament today.

Ranil Wickremesinghe defeated presidential hopefuls MPs Dullas Alahapperuma and Anura Kuma Dissanayake to be elected as the new President.

Following the resignation of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa due to public outcry in May, Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as the Prime Minister.

Thereafter, after the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa also due to public outcry in July, Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as the Acting President.

As per the Constitution of Sri Lanka, a secret ballot was held in Parliament today to elect a new President to complete the remaining tenure of the former President.

223 Members of Parliament had voted, while 2 MPs had abstained. 219 votes were valid and 4 votes were identified as invalid.

Thereby, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has previously lost two Presidential elections and even his MP seat, has today been elected the 8th Executive President of Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
