Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa criticized the deployment of armed forces to clear protesters at the Presidential Secretariat and Galle Face in Colombo early on Friday.

In a Twitter message, MP Premadasa said, “a cowardly assault against PEACEFUL protestors, who agreed to vacate the sites today”.

He further said it is a useless display of ego and brute force putting innocent lives at risk.

MP Sajith Premadasa pointed out that this move endangers Sri Lanka’s international image at a critical juncture.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has also condemned “the brutal and despicable attack on the peaceful protesters at Gall Face by the military”.

The HRCSL said this is a total violation of the fundamental rights of the people by the actions of the Executive.

The Commission has further advised the State to identify the perpetrators and take appropriate actions and ensure such actions by the military or any action within the control of the State to violate the fundamental rights of the people will never occur in the future.

The HRCSL added that in the meantime, the Commission too will conduct its own investigation to ensure that rule of law is maintained. (NewsWire)
