The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has accused Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Sanath Nishantha of contempt of court.

Addressing the media yesterday (23), MP Sanath Nishantha said the officers from the Attorney General’s Department and some judges are responsible for letting lose criminals who engaged in recent violence.

“Some judges should take responsibility for this, they give bail for these criminals in one day,” he said.

The MP said that for cases under the Public Property Act and Archaeology act bail can only be obtained from the High Court but several magistrates are now handing out bails.

Commenting on the MP’s statement, JVP member and lawyer Sunil Watagala condemned the statement made by MP Sanath Nishantha pertaining to the Judiciary.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, he accused MP Sanath Nishantha of insulting the judiciary.

Lawyer Watagala pointed out that it is the responsibility of justices to grant bail if there is no evidence to prove the suspect is guilty.

“People like him are responsible for slandering and insulting the judiciary to date. He does not have the legal right to make such a statement on the judiciary,” the JVP member added. (NewsWire)
