A petition has been filed accusing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Sanath Nishantha of contempt of court.

The petition was filed at the Court of Appeal by a lawyer today (29).

Last week (24), MP Sanath Nishantha was accused of contempt of court by several persons.

Addressing the media on Monday (23), MP Sanath Nishantha said the officers from the Attorney General’s Department and some judges are responsible for letting loose criminals who engaged in the recent violence in Sri Lanka.

“Some judges should take responsibility for this, they give bail for these criminals in one day,” he said.

The SLPP MP further said that for cases under the Public Property Act and Archaeology act bail can only be obtained from the High Court but several magistrates are now handing out bails.

Thereafter, the Fort Magistrate ordered the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct an investigation pertaining to alleged contempt of court statements made by SLPP MP Sanath Nishantha.

The Fort Magistrate ordered the CID to obtain original videos of the press conference in which MP Sanath Nishantha had made the controversial statements.

The Magistrate also ordered the CID to conduct an investigation to determine if the MP had made any comments that slandered the judiciary. (NewsWire)
