18-year-old monk arrested over the murder of the Seeduwa Nandarama Temple Chief incumbent

An 18-year-old monk has been arrested over the murder of the Chief incumbent of the Nandarama Temple in Seeduwa – Vethewa .

The Seeduwa Police said the 18-year-old monk was arrested in Katunayake today. 

The Chief incumbent of the Nandarama Temple in Seeduwa – Vethewa was found dead in a suspicious manner within the temple premises yesterday after the Police were informed of a foul smell from the premises. 

Upon arrival, the Police team inspected the temple premises and found that the smell was being emitted from the accommodation of the Chief incumbent of the Temple.

As the door of the room was locked from inside, the officers had broken open the door to find the Chief incumbent dead on his bed. The body of the monk was found with his eyes blindfolded, mouth gagged with a cloth, and body covered with his own cowl.

The Police said the deceased has been identified as 50-year-old Venerable Medagama Thero.

Investigations had revealed that another monk who was also working at the temple along with the deceased was missing and his whereabouts were unknown. It had also come to light that a Defender and a Wagon R Car that belong to the temple are also missing.

The Seeduwa Police had launched investigations into the incident thereafter. (NewsWire)
