United National Party (UNP) member Sisira Ranasinghe has been elected as the new Chairman of the Kandy- Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha via a toss.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) members Chaminda Karunaratne and Ravipriya Chamikara, and UNP’s Sisira Ranasinghe had contested for the post.

During the initial round of votes, Karunaratne had obtained 10 votes, Ranasinghe 08, and Chamikara 02 votes.

Upon Chamikara’s elimination, both Karunaratne and Ranasinghe had obtained 10 votes each in the second round of voting.

The Commissioner of Local Government of the Central Province Menaka Herath thereafter announced that the final decision will be made via a toss.

Thereby, the UNP’s Sisira Ranasinghe had won the toss to be elected as the new Chairman of the Kandy- Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha.

A tense situation had been reported thereafter as SLPP’s Ravipriya Chamikara had been found to have voted in favour of the UNP candidate.

The Police had intervened and contained the situation. (NewsWire)
