Weather Alert : Advisory issued for heavy rains & rough seas

The Department of Meteorology says heavy rains can be expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today as well.

Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. 

Heavy falls above 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. 

The department further said several spells of showers will occur in the Northern and North-Western provinces. 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara district during the evening or night. 

Strong winds of about 50-55 kmph can be expected over the western slopes of the Central hills, Northern, North-Central, and Southern provinces, and in the Trincomalee and Puttalam districts.

The public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. 

Meanwhile, the Naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture into the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambanthota and the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Mannar via Colombo during the next 24 hours. 

The Met Department said showers will occur at times in the sea area off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo. 

Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Trincomalee via Puttalam and Kankasanturai. 

Wind speed may increase up to 60-70 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Trincomalee via Puttalam and Kankasanturai will be rough and the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be very rough. 

There is a possibility for swell waves to increase about 2.5 m – 3.0 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and about 2.0 m – 2.5 m in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Mannar via Colombo. (NewsWire)
